The Charlottesville Playwrights’ Collective is accepting submissions

The Charlottesville Playwrights Collective (CPC) seeks new full-length stage plays written by Charlottesville/Albemarle area playwrights.

CPC is a self-producing, cooperative organization. Playwrights who submit work for consideration must commit to serving as Producer of their own work, and to making a substantial work contribution to at least one other CPC production. Playwrights whose work is being considered for inclusion will be invited to meet with the CPC Steering Committee to discuss this requirement before the selections are finalized. Once selected, and working with the Steering Committee, the playwright/producer must assemble a team (director, stage manager, designers, casting for crucial roles), then come back to the Steering Committee to set a budget and a date for their production.

The Collective is currently seeking scripts which meet the following criteria:

  1. A full-length play, of at least one hour’s running time.
  2. The script must not have had a fully-staged production in the Charlottesville area.
  3. Plays that have been produced locally as readings and/or lightly staged workshop productions are acceptable. Plays previously produced outside the Charlottesville area may be considered at the discretion of the Steering Committee.
  4. The script must have undergone some developmental process (workshop, table reading) and be production ready.
  5. The script may not be a musical, although incidental music is allowed.
  6. Simple production values and limited cast size may increase a script’s chances of being selected.
  7. The script must bear no encumbrances on its production rights, including on the rights to play any incidental music.

Playwrights whose scripts are offered production must:

  1. Live, work or study within Charlottesville/Albemarle or an adjacent county, AND must be able to commute easily into Charlottesville for all necessary meetings and rehearsals throughout the production process.
  2. Assist substantially in the production of at least one other additional Collective play.
  3. Act as producer or co-producer of his/her/their production, including assembling the production team (see above).
  4. Participate actively in the development and production of his/her/their script, including attending rehearsals and/or production meetings as necessary.

Selecting directors

  1. Because this is an opportunity to have one’s script developed with collaborators, playwrights may not direct their own scripts.
  2. The selection of a director is subject to the approval of the leadership of the CPC.
  3. If needed, the CPC will assist the playwright in identifying and recruiting a director.

To submit one or more scripts for consideration:

  1. We will accept only electronic PDF copies of scripts.
  2. You may submit up to three scripts for consideration. Each script must be e-mailed separately.
  3. Each submission must be accompanied by a cover page/letter, listing:
    1. Title of the play
    2. Name of playwright
    3. Mailing address, phone number and email address of playwright
    4. Cast of characters, including specific casting requirements (age, gender, ethnicity, skills)
    5. Description of the basic production needs, including set, lighting, sound effects, costuming, props, special effects, etc.
    6. Approximation of the play’s running time
    7. The script’s previous developmental history (see script criterion 3, above)
    8. The following statement “I understand that if my play is considered as a CPC production, I will be invited to discuss my obligations to CPC before the decision is finalized.”
  4. Send submissions to: submit@cvilleplays.org. Please use the subject line “script submission.”

We will notify playwrights quarterly of our selection decisions.
